Our Design Process

A structured, collaborative approach delivering your finished cover in 7–10 working days

1

Creative Discovery

We begin with a structured brief covering your book's genre, intended readership, tone, central themes, and comparable titles whose covers appeal to you. The clearer the brief, the sharper the first concepts.

Deliverable: Completed creative brief and curated visual mood board
2

Market & Competitor Analysis

Our designers audit current bestsellers in your category — examining colour palettes, typographic trends, compositional conventions, and gaps in the market that your cover can exploit.

Timeline: 1–2 working days
3

Initial Concept Presentation

You receive 3–5 distinct cover directions — each demonstrating a different visual approach in terms of imagery, type treatment, colour palette, and overall mood. Real options, not minor variations.

Timeline: 3–4 working days
4

Direction Selection & Feedback

You identify the concept — or combination of elements from multiple concepts — that best represents your vision. Detailed written feedback at this stage produces the strongest revisions.

Your Input: Concept selection and structured feedback notes
5

Refinement Rounds

We develop the selected direction based on your feedback — adjusting imagery, fine-tuning typography, balancing colour, and perfecting every detail. Revision rounds continue until you are satisfied.

Timeline: 2–3 working days per revision cycle
6

Technical File Preparation

Once approved, all files are prepared for both digital and print publishing — proper bleed and trim settings, resolution optimisation, spine width calculations, and platform-specific formatting.

Timeline: 1–2 working days
7

Final Delivery & Ongoing Support

You receive the complete file package alongside 3D mockup renders and a usage guide. Our team remains available to answer technical questions throughout your publishing and upload process.

You Receive: Print files, ebook files, 3D mockups, layered source files

The Anatomy of an Effective Cover

Six design disciplines that separate a forgettable cover from one that sells

Typography

Typeface selection that reads clearly at thumbnail scale, signals genre convincingly, and creates visual hierarchy between title, subtitle, and author name.

Colour Strategy

Palettes chosen with intention — warm, intimate tones for romance; dark, desaturated hues for suspense; vivid primaries for children's titles — each triggering the right emotional expectation.

Visual Imagery

Photography or illustration that communicates genre and tone at a glance — arresting enough to pause a scroll or hold a browser's attention on a shelf.

Composition & Layout

Structured, deliberate arrangement of all elements — with considered hierarchy, visual weight, and intentional negative space guiding the eye naturally through the design.

Thumbnail Legibility

Design decisions made with small-screen contexts in mind — because the majority of readers first encounter your book as a small image on a mobile device or online storefront.

Genre Signalling

Visual conventions that immediately orientate the reader — meeting established genre expectations whilst carving out sufficient distinctiveness to stand apart from direct competitors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before commissioning your cover design

How long does the full design process take?
Most cover projects are completed within 7–10 working days from project commencement. Initial concept options are typically ready within 3–4 working days. Final files follow within a few days of concept approval. If your schedule requires an accelerated timeline, please mention this when you make contact and we will advise on availability.
What happens if none of the initial concepts appeal to me?
This is rare, but occasionally the initial direction needs to be reconsidered entirely. In that situation we discuss what is not working, revisit the brief together, and develop a new round of concepts at no additional charge. You may also request that specific elements from multiple initial concepts are combined into a single revised direction.
Do I retain full ownership of my finished cover?
Yes — entirely. On completion, all rights to use the cover for your book transfer to you. You receive all working source files as well as production-ready outputs, and you are free to use the artwork across any format or edition of your title. The only restriction is that the design itself may not be resold separately to third parties as a standalone asset.
What information do I need to provide at the start?
We provide a structured creative brief at the outset. It covers your title and author name, genre, target readership, tone, key themes, a short synopsis, comparable published titles whose covers you find appealing, and anything you specifically wish to avoid. The richer your brief, the closer our initial concepts will be to your vision.
Can my cover be designed before the manuscript is complete?
Absolutely. Many authors commission their cover during writing — for pre-order listings, early marketing, or simply for motivation. Provided you have a working title, a clear genre, and a general sense of the book's concept, we have sufficient information to create an effective cover. Minor text amendments are accommodated without difficulty if details change before publication.
Which print trim sizes do you support?
We prepare files for all standard trade paperback trim sizes — including 5×8", 5.5×8.5", 6×9", 5.25×8", and 8×10" for heavily illustrated titles. Bespoke dimensions can also be accommodated. Every print file is formatted with the correct bleed allowance, spine width (calculated from your confirmed page count), and safe-zone margins for clean trimming.
Are stock images and typefaces included in the quoted price?
Yes — both are included within your package. All stock photography is sourced from licensed premium libraries, and every typeface carries a full commercial licence permitting publication. There are no supplementary fees for imagery or fonts, and you face no legal exposure in publishing or distributing your title using this artwork.
Will the same cover work for both ebook and print editions?
Yes. We deliver separate, optimised files for each context. The ebook version consists of the front cover at platform-specified dimensions. The print version is a full wrap — front, spine, and back — formatted to your chosen trim size and page count. Both are prepared to the precise technical specifications of major publishing platforms.
What if I need minor changes after approving the final design?
Small text corrections — a subtitle adjustment, a corrected spelling — made within 30 days of final delivery are accommodated without charge. More significant design changes after sign-off would be scoped and quoted separately. We are flexible on reasonable requests, and our goal is always that you remain completely satisfied with the finished cover.
Are there reduced rates for a series of books?
Yes. Commissioning covers for a series is more efficient for both parties, and our series pricing reflects that. The first book is developed at the full package rate; subsequent volumes in the series attract preferential pricing once the design architecture is established. Please mention your series plans when you get in touch and we will tailor a proposal accordingly.
